Van Gogh received little recognition during his lifetime and sold only a single painting. Today, however, he is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of modern painting, whose work strongly influenced both Expressionism and Fauvism. In addition to van Gogh, other Dutch artists also played a key role in shaping the development of landscape painting.
