Kunstdrucke von Emilie Mediz-Pelikan

Collection: Art prints by Emilie Mediz-Pelikan

Emilie Mediz-Pelikan was an Austrian painter and one of the most important female artists of Austrian modernism around 1900. She initially trained at the art school for women and girls in Vienna, as women were still denied access to state academies. Her independent artistic talent became apparent early on, which she developed further through study visits to Munich and intensive exchanges with contemporary artists.

Together with her husband, the painter Karl Mediz, Mediz-Pelikan settled temporarily in Dachau and later in Dresden. During this phase, she created a large part of her work, which is primarily characterized by landscapes, rural scenes and symbolically charged depictions. The mountain landscapes of South Tyrol and the Alps in particular became a central motif in her painting.

Stylistically, Mediz-Pelikan combined elements of symbolism with an increasingly expressive language of color and form. Her works are characterized by strong contrasts, simplified forms and an intense, often gloomy mood. She pursued a very personal approach to art, focusing on inner feelings and spiritual themes.

Despite recognition in artistic circles, Emilie Mediz-Pelikan remained largely in the shadow of her male colleagues during her lifetime. Today, she is increasingly being rediscovered as an independent and powerful modernist. Her works are regarded as impressive examples of subjective, emotionally charged landscape painting.
