Kunstdrucke von Berthe Morisot

Collection: Art prints by Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot was a French painter and one of the central figures of Impressionism. She came from a wealthy bourgeois family who supported her artistic education, although women were denied access to state art academies. Morisot received private tuition and studied intensively at the Louvre, where she copied works by the Old Masters and acquired a solid foundation in drawing.

Early on, Morisot was in close contact with artists such as Édouard Manet, who had a lasting influence on her and painted several portraits of her. At the same time, she developed an independent pictorial language characterized by a particularly light, free brushwork and a bright, nuanced colour palette. She was the only woman in the core circle of Impressionists and took part in almost all Impressionist group exhibitions.

In terms of content, Morisot concentrated primarily on scenes of private and domestic life, portraits of women and children as well as garden and interior scenes. These motifs not only reflect her personal world, but also open up a new, feminine view of modern 19th century society. Her paintings often appear spontaneous and sketchy, but are carefully composed.

Over the course of her career, Morisot increasingly moved away from clear contours and developed an ever freer style of painting in which light and movement take center stage. Despite her important role within Impressionism, her work was underestimated for a long time. Today, Berthe Morisot is considered one of the most important artists of modernism, whose influence and artistic quality are increasingly recognized.
