Collection: Art prints by Charles Leikert

Charles Leikert was a Dutch painter of the 19th century who is best known for his atmospheric landscapes and winter scenes. He received his artistic training in The Hague and was an early follower of the Dutch landscape painting tradition of the 17th century, in particular painters such as Aelbert Cuyp and Meindert Hobbema. At the same time, he was influenced by the Romantic conception of landscape of his own time.

Leikert mainly devoted himself to river landscapes, village views, canals and winter scenes with ice skaters. His paintings often show calm, wide landscapes under a high sky, in which light and atmosphere play a central role. His winter scenes in particular enjoyed great popularity, as they depict rural life with narrative details and a fine sense of atmosphere.

Stylistically, Leikert's works are characterized by careful, detailed execution and harmonious colouring. He combined realistic observation of nature with an idealized, often idyllic depiction of the landscape. Figures and staffage serve less as the main motif, but rather enliven the scenery and reinforce the narrative character of his paintings.

Charles Leikert was successful during his lifetime and exhibited regularly. His works were widely distributed, especially in the international art trade. Today he is considered a typical representative of Dutch Romanticism, whose landscapes are valued for their atmospheric quality and technical precision and remain in demand on the art market.
