Kunstdrucke von Albrecht Dürer

Collection: Art Prints by Albrecht Dürer

Albrecht Dürer was a German painter, graphic artist and art theorist who is considered one of the most important representatives of the German Renaissance. He came from a family of craftsmen in Nuremberg, where his father was a respected goldsmith, and showed an exceptional talent for drawing at an early age. From 1486, Dürer completed an apprenticeship with the Nuremberg painter and printer Michael Wolgemut, where he intensively studied late Gothic painting and printmaking and laid the foundations for his later mastery of a wide range of techniques.

In his early works, Dürer devoted himself primarily to religious themes and portraiture and created works that combined an unusually precise observation of nature with a deep spiritual expressiveness. Two trips to Italy, where he studied the achievements of the Italian Renaissance and made contact with painters such as Giovanni Bellini, were decisive for his artistic development. These encounters deepened his interest in the theory of proportion, perspective and the theoretical penetration of art, which set him apart from most of his German contemporaries.

A central feature of Dürer's work was his extraordinary mastery of printmaking, particularly woodcuts and engravings. His woodcut series on the Apocalypse and master engravings such as Knight, Death and the Devil or Melencolia I, which are among the most famous prints in the entire history of art, are famous. He also created important paintings such as the Four Apostles and the Feast of the Rosary, which demonstrate his ability to combine Italian Renaissance ideals with northern Alpine pictorial tradition to create an independent synthesis.

In addition to his work as an artist, Dürer was also a formative figure in German intellectual life as an art theorist. He wrote fundamental writings on proportions, the doctrine of attachment and the teaching of measurement, making him one of the first German artists to lay claim to a scientifically founded theory of art. He cultivated contacts with the most important humanists of his time, including Erasmus of Rotterdam, and also enjoyed a high reputation at the court of Emperor Maximilian I. Today, Albrecht Dürer is regarded as a key figure in European art history, whose works are represented in the world's most important museums and are extremely highly valued on the art market.
