Jacques-Louis David was a French painter of the late 18th and early 19th century and is considered the most important representative of classicism. He was born in Paris in 1748 and received his artistic training at a time that was characterized by a confrontation with antiquity and profound political upheavals. Early on, he developed the aspiration to orient painting towards moral clarity, formal rigor and historical significance.

David studied at the Académie royale and won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1774, which enabled him to spend several years in Italy. There he intensively studied ancient art and Renaissance painting. These studies had a lasting influence on his style: clear contours, balanced compositions and a reduced, controlled use of color became central features of his work. At the same time, he did not see history as mere illustration, but as a vehicle for political and ethical statements.

At the heart of David's painting are historical and mythological scenes that can be read as models of virtue, sacrifice and civic responsibility. Works such as the "Oath of the Horatii" mark a conscious break with decorative rococo and formulate a new, strictly rational ideal of art. His paintings are carefully composed, clearly structured figuratively and aimed at making a clear statement.

During the French Revolution, David took an active political role and put his art at the service of the new republic. He created portraits and history paintings that glorified revolutionary values and monumentalized political events. He later became the official painter of Napoleon, whose reign he staged in large-scale, representative paintings. This shows how closely David's art was linked to the power and ideological relationships of his time.

After the fall of Napoleon, David went into exile in Brussels, where he lived until his death in 1825. However, his influence on European art was lasting. As a teacher, he influenced an entire generation of artists, including Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Jacques-Louis David left behind an oeuvre of enormous artistic and cultural-historical significance. His consistent focus on clarity, order and historical statement made him a key figure on the path from the courtly art of the Ancien Régime to the politically understood painting of modernism.
