Kunstdrucke von Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec

Collection: Art prints by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, graphic artist and illustrator and is one of the most important representatives of Post-Impressionism. He came from an old aristocratic family, but suffered from a serious bone disease since his youth, which severely limited him physically. These formative experiences led him to devote himself intensively to drawing and art at an early age. From 1882, Toulouse-Lautrec studied in Paris under Léon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon, where he received a sound academic education, but soon broke away from traditional conventions.

In the 1880s, he settled in the Parisian district of Montmartre, which became the center of his artistic work. There he found his most important motifs in the city's nightlife: dance halls, cabarets, cafés and brothels. He was particularly fascinated by the artists and dancers of the Moulin Rouge. With a sharp eye and often ruthless honesty, he captured the hustle and bustle of the demimonde and portrayed famous personalities such as singers, dancers and prostitutes.

Toulouse-Lautrec developed an unmistakable pictorial language with strong outlines, flat areas of color and unusual image details, which was strongly influenced by Japanese woodblock prints. In addition to painting, he achieved great importance as a poster artist. His advertising posters revolutionized modern graphic art and combined art with commercial advertising in a new way.

Despite his relatively short life, Toulouse-Lautrec left behind an extensive and influential body of work. He died in 1901 at the age of just 36, but is still regarded today as one of the sharpest observers of modern city life. His works are represented in major museums around the world and are in great demand on the art market.
