Kunstdrucke von Thomas Cole

Collection: Art prints by Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole was an American landscape painter and is considered the founder of the Hudson River School, the first independent art movement in the United States. He was born in England and emigrated to America with his family as a teenager. Cole initially worked as a craftsman and portrait painter before increasingly turning to landscape painting, where he found his true artistic destiny.

In the 1820s, Cole discovered the landscapes of the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains, which became his most important motifs. His paintings depict American nature as a sublime, almost untouched world of great spiritual and moral significance. Dramatic lighting moods, wide panoramas and carefully composed natural forms characterize his works and lend them a romantic, often symbolic effect.

In addition to pure landscapes, Cole also created allegorical picture cycles in which he dealt with historical, religious and philosophical themes. His series The Course of Empire, in which he depicts the rise and fall of civilizations through landscape paintings, is particularly well known. These works reflect his critical attitude towards industrialization and human intervention in nature.

Thomas Cole achieved great recognition during his lifetime and influenced an entire generation of American artists. His work laid the foundations for a national landscape painting movement that saw nature as an element of identity. Today he is regarded as a central figure in 19th century American art, whose paintings represent a combination of observation of nature, romanticism and moral reflection.
