Jacob van Ruisdael was a Dutch painter and is one of the most important landscape artists of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. He came from Haarlem, an important art city of the 17th century, and probably received his training in a family environment, as his father and uncle were also active as painters. Ruisdael developed an extraordinary sensitivity for observing nature and pictorial composition at an early age.

The landscape in all its manifestations is at the center of his work. Ruisdael painted vast plains, dense forests, river landscapes, windmills, dunes and dramatic sky formations. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he lent nature a monumental, often serious effect. Clouds, light and weather play a central role in his paintings and significantly determine the mood of the scenes depicted.

Ruisdael's painting is characterized by a combination of realistic detail and emotional depth. His landscapes are not just topographical views, but express inner feelings and existential thoughts. His depictions of waterfalls, storm clouds and lonely paths, which create a strong atmospheric tension, are particularly well-known.

Despite his high artistic quality, Ruisdael achieved little commercial success during his lifetime. It was only later that his importance was fully recognized. Today, Jacob van Ruisdael is considered one of the greatest landscape painters in the history of art, whose work had a lasting influence on later generations of artists, particularly on 19th century Romantic landscape painting.
