Albert Bierstadt was an American landscape painter of German origin and one of the best known representatives of the Hudson River School and the Rocky Mountain School. He became famous for his dramatic depictions of the American wilderness with almost photographic accuracy. Bierstadt was convinced that the United States was destined to expand westward and, on several expeditions, created depictions of the landscapes of the West, which to this day remain among his most important works.
