Kunstdrucke von Alfred Sisley

Collection: Art prints by Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley was a French landscape painter and one of the most important representatives of Impressionism. He came from a wealthy English merchant family and spent his youth partly in France and partly in England. After a brief stay in London, Sisley began studying art in Paris in the early 1860s, where he met artists such as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir in the studio of Charles Gleyre.

From the very beginning, Sisley devoted himself almost exclusively to landscape painting. He preferred to work outdoors and concentrated on the direct reproduction of light, atmosphere and weather moods. Rivers, paths, bridges and the edges of villages around Paris and later in the region around Moret-sur-Loing became his most important motifs. Sisley strove less for dramatic effects than for a calm, harmonious depiction of nature.

Stylistically, Sisley's work is characterized by a clear composition, a bright, finely graduated colour palette and an even, lively brushwork. Sky and water play a central role in his paintings and contribute significantly to the mood of the landscapes. Although he was closely associated with the leading Impressionists and took part in several Impressionist exhibitions, he did not achieve great commercial success during his lifetime.

It was only after his death that Sisley's importance was fully recognized. Today, Alfred Sisley is considered one of the most consistent and poetic Impressionist landscape painters, whose works are appreciated for their balance, sensitivity and atmospheric density.
