Kunstdrucke von Anton Nowak

Collection: Art prints by Anton Nowak

Anton Nowak was an Austrian painter and graphic artist who became particularly well known for his landscapes and genre paintings. From 1892 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Christian Griepenkerl and had previously attended Leopold Karl Müller's special school. In 1894 he joined the Vienna Künstlerhaus, and in 1897 he was one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession, with his works shown in the group's first exhibition. In 1908/09 Nowak was president of the Secession, and some of his woodcuts appeared in its magazine Ver Sacrum. He was also elected to the committee of the Vereinigung Bildender Künstler Österreichs in 1899. Although his painterly works were little influenced by Viennese Art Nouveau, they show tendencies of Pointillism and Post-Impressionism during the Secession period. He painted landscapes, particularly under the influence of Theodor von Hörmann, and also created early genre paintings. Nowak was head of the painting school in Brno for many years and remained an important representative of the Austrian art scene, whose graphic works are strongly associated with Secessionism.
