Kunstdrucke von Childe Hassam

Collection: Art prints by Childe Hassam

Childe Hassam was an American painter and one of the most important representatives of American Impressionism. He began his artistic career as an illustrator and wood engraver in Boston before devoting himself entirely to painting. He was largely spared formal academic training; instead, he developed his skills through intensive self-study and early trips to Europe.

At the end of the 1880s, Hassam spent several years in Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian and became acquainted with the works of the French Impressionists. This stay had a lasting effect on his perception of light, color and atmosphere. After his return to the USA, he transferred the Impressionist style of painting to American motifs and became a central figure in the modern art scene.

Hassam devoted himself primarily to cityscapes, coastal landscapes and garden scenes. His depictions of New York, Boston and New England, in which he captured the pulsating life of the cities as well as quiet, light-flooded moments, are particularly well known. He also became famous for his so-called "Flag Series", in which he painted American flags in the streets of New York during the First World War.

Stylistically, Hassam's works are characterized by a bright colour palette, lively brushwork and a keen sense of light moods. He was a co-founder of the artists' group "The Ten", which turned away from academic constraints and advocated modern, independent American art.
