Edward Theodore Compton was a British painter, illustrator and alpinist who is best known for his impressive depictions of high mountains. He was born in London and initially trained as an artist there before turning his attention permanently to the Alps. In the course of his life, Compton undertook numerous mountain tours, during which he climbed many peaks for the first time or opened up new routes.
