Kunstdrucke von Eugène Galien-Laloue

Collection: Art prints by Eugène Galien-Laloue

Eugène Galien-Laloue was a French painter and illustrator who is best known for his cityscapes. He was born in Paris and grew up in an artistic environment, as his father worked as a stage designer. Galien-Laloue received an academic education at the École des Beaux-Arts, but had to reorient his artistic career early on due to a military injury and turned increasingly to painting and illustration.

His work focuses on views of Paris, in particular streets, squares and boulevards, which he depicted in different weather conditions and at different times of day. Rain, snow, fog and evening light played a central role in his paintings and lent them a distinct atmospheric effect. He often enlivened his cityscapes with elegant walkers, carriages and lantern light, creating a lively image of everyday life in Paris around 1900.

Galien-Laloue not only worked under his own name, but also used numerous pseudonyms, which contributed to the long-standing confusion about his oeuvre. Stylistically, he was close to Impressionism without belonging to any particular group of artists. His painting style is characterized by fine, controlled brushwork and a special feeling for light reflections on wet streets and river surfaces.

Thanks to his high productivity and the great demand for his cityscapes, Galien-Laloue was very successful during his lifetime. Today, his works are considered important testimonies to Parisian city life during the Belle Époque and are extremely popular on the international art market.
