Kunstdrucke von Gustave Caillebotte

Collection: Art prints by Gustave Caillebotte

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and one of the most important representatives of Impressionism, but he occupied a special position within the movement. He came from a wealthy Parisian family and initially studied law and shipbuilding before turning to art. From 1873, Caillebotte attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and received an academic education that had a lasting impact on his precise drawing and clear pictorial structure.

In his early works, Caillebotte combined a realistic attention to detail with modern pictorial themes. He became particularly famous for his depictions of contemporary Paris, in which he captured urban life, new boulevards and everyday life in the big city. Unusual perspectives, steep framing and views from above or close up lend his pictures an almost photographic effect and set him apart from many of his Impressionist colleagues.

In addition to painting, Caillebotte played a central role as a patron of the Impressionists. Thanks to his wealth, he supported artists such as Monet, Renoir and Degas, bought their works and contributed significantly to the organization and financing of Impressionist exhibitions. At the same time, he continued to develop his own style, which reveals a calmer, more structured view of Impressionism.

In his later years, Caillebotte turned increasingly to landscape and garden painting, particularly at his estate in Petit Gennevilliers. Despite his relatively early death, he left behind a significant body of work. His collection of Impressionist paintings, which he bequeathed to the French state, made a decisive contribution to the recognition of Impressionism. Today, Gustave Caillebotte is regarded as an important mediator between Realism and Impressionism and as a formative chronicler of modern city life.
