Kunstdrucke von Henri Matisse

Collection: Art Prints by Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was a French painter, graphic artist and sculptor and is one of the most important artists of classical modernism. He did not begin his career as an artist, but studied law before finally turning to art after an illness. From the 1890s, Matisse received academic training in Paris, including under Gustave Moreau, who encouraged him to pursue an independent artistic path.

At the beginning, Matisse intensively explored Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. However, he achieved a decisive breakthrough around 1905 as a leading figure in Fauvism. During this phase, he developed a radically simplified pictorial language with bright, often unmixed colors and highly simplified forms. Color became Matisse's central means of expression, independent of the natural appearance of things.

Thematically, Matisse devoted himself primarily to interiors, still lifes, portraits and figure paintings. His works often depict calm, harmonious scenes that convey a sense of balance and joie de vivre. Despite the formal simplification, his compositions are carefully thought out and are characterized by a fine balance of line, surface and color.

In his later years, when he was increasingly limited by health problems, Matisse developed the technique of colored paper cuts, with which he once again opened up new expressive possibilities. These works are among the most innovative of his late work. Today, Henri Matisse is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, whose work has had a lasting impact on the development of modern art.
