Joaquín Sorolla was a Spanish painter and one of the most important representatives of Luminism as well as one of the most important figures in Spanish painting around 1900. He came from Valencia and lost his parents at an early age, but grew up in a supportive family environment. He began his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia and later continued it in Madrid, where he intensively studied the works of the great Spanish masters.

Early successes enabled Sorolla to study in Paris, where he came into contact with Impressionism. However, he combined these influences with his own style of painting, which focused strongly on the effect of light. Sorolla devoted himself above all to depicting beach and sea scenes, everyday life on the Mediterranean coast and children and bathers in the glistening sunlight. His paintings are characterized by a bright, luminous colour palette and extremely virtuoso, rapid brushwork.

In addition to his famous coastal scenes, Sorolla also created numerous portraits and socially critical works that brought him international recognition. A highlight of his oeuvre was the monumental cycle Visions of Spain, which he painted on behalf of the Hispanic Society of America and which depicts Spain's regional traditions and landscapes in large-format paintings.

Joaquín Sorolla was extraordinarily successful during his lifetime and exhibited worldwide. Despite his early death, he is today regarded as one of the great painters of light, whose work represents a unique combination of Impressionism, Realism and Spanish tradition and still enjoys great popularity today.
