Kunstdrucke von Max Liebermann

Collection: Art prints by Max Liebermann

Max Liebermann was a German painter and graphic artist who is considered one of the most important representatives of German Impressionism. He came from a wealthy Jewish entrepreneurial family in Berlin and initially began studying chemistry at his parents' request, but soon decided to pursue art for good. From 1868, Liebermann studied at the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art in Weimar, where he intensively studied realistic painting and oriented himself towards models such as the French Barbizon School.

In his early works, Liebermann mainly focused on socially critical themes and depicted the simple lives of workers, farmers and craftsmen. These naturalistic paintings were initially rejected as they were considered too blunt and unembellished. However, with his increasing travels to France and the Netherlands, Liebermann turned more towards Impressionism. Light, movement and loose brushwork increasingly became the focus of his work.

A central motif in Liebermann's work became the bourgeois life of his time, in particular scenes from gardens, parks and the leisure activities of the city. His depictions of riders on the beach at Scheveningen and the numerous garden pictures from his summer house on Wannsee are famous. These works reveal his masterful ability to capture fleeting moods of light and vivid snapshots.

In addition to his work as an artist, Liebermann was a formative personality in German art life. He was co-founder and president of the Berlin Secession and played a key role in the recognition of modern art. Despite his great success, he was ostracized in the 1930s due to his Jewish origins. Today, Max Liebermann is regarded as a key figure of modernism in Germany and his works are represented in major museums and highly valued on the art market.
