Maximilien Luce was a French painter and graphic artist and is one of the most important representatives of Neo-Impressionism. He came from a humble background and began his career as an engraver and lithographer, which gave him precise drawing and technical training early on. At the same time, he attended evening classes at art schools in Paris and increasingly turned to painting.

In the 1880s, Luce came into contact with the ideas of pointillism and divisionism, in particular through exchanges with artists such as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. He adopted the technique of applying paint side by side, but used it more freely and expressively than his role models. Light and color played a central role in his work, without the pictorial effect remaining subordinate to purely theoretical principles.

Thematically, Luce devoted himself primarily to modern life and the world of work. Industrial landscapes, building sites, factories and scenes from the lives of workers are among his most important motifs. These pictorial themes also reflect his political convictions, as Luce was close to anarchism and was critical of social inequality. He also created numerous cityscapes, landscapes and river paintings in which he captured atmospheric lighting moods.

In the course of his work, Luce gradually moved away from the strict pointillist technique and developed a freer, more impasto style of painting. Despite occasional political repression, he gained recognition and exhibited regularly. Today, Maximilien Luce is regarded as an important chronicler of industrial modernism, whose work represents a combination of social commitment and innovative color and light design.
