Collection: Art prints by Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne was a French painter and is considered one of the decisive transitional figures from Impressionism to modern art in the 20th century. He came from Aix-en-Provence and initially began studying law, but abandoned this to devote himself to art against his father's wishes. In Paris, he came into early contact with the Impressionists, in particular Camille Pissarro, who had a great influence on his artistic development.

Cézanne's early works are characterized by dark colors and an impasto, sometimes violent painting style. Over time, however, he developed a calmer, more structured style that increasingly moved away from the purely atmospheric concept of Impressionism. He was less interested in the fleeting impression than in the lasting structure of the form. Landscapes, still lifes and portraits became objects of study for him, on which he systematically explored color and form.

Characteristic of Cézanne's painting is the structure of the picture surface through areas of color and clear volumes. He attempted to reduce nature to its basic geometric forms and thus created a new pictorial order that redefined perspective and space. His depictions of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which he repeatedly painted from different angles, are particularly well-known.

During his lifetime, Cézanne remained largely misunderstood and worked in seclusion in the south of France. It was only in his final years that he gained increasing recognition. Today, Paul Cézanne is regarded as the "father of modernism", whose work had a decisive influence on cubism and abstract art and had a lasting impact on the development of modern painting.
