Kunstdrucke von Paul Gauguin

Collection: Art prints by Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin was a French painter and is one of the most important representatives of Post-Impressionism. He grew up partly in France and partly in Peru and initially began his career outside of art as a stockbroker. It was not until the 1880s that he decided to give up his secure livelihood and devote himself entirely to painting, a move that had a lasting impact on his life.

In his early works, Gauguin was close to Impressionism and was associated with artists such as Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne. However, he soon turned away from naturalistic reproduction and sought a simplified, symbolic pictorial language. Stays in Brittany, particularly in Pont-Aven, led to the development of a two-dimensional style with strong colors, clear contours and decorative effect, which became known as Synthetism.

In search of a more original life and new artistic impulses, Gauguin traveled to the South Seas several times, especially to Tahiti. It was there that he created his most famous works, in which he combined exotic landscapes, figures and mythological themes. He gave color an emotional and symbolic meaning, while perspective and spatial depth were deliberately simplified.

Gauguin's life was marked by financial difficulties, illness and conflict, but remained characterized by uncompromising artistic consistency. During his lifetime, his work was only partially recognized. Today, Paul Gauguin is regarded as a key figure of modernism, whose radical departure from realism had a major influence on Symbolism, Expressionism and the development of modern art.
