Kunstdrucke von Paul Gustav Fischer

Collection: Art prints by Paul Gustav Fischer

Paul Gustav Fischer was a Danish painter who is best known for his atmospheric cityscapes and as an important representative of Danish Impressionism. He began his artistic training in 1881 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, but soon dropped out as he found the academic teaching methods too strict. Instead, he continued to develop largely self-taught and found his own pictorial language early on.

At the beginning of his career, Fischer mainly devoted himself to genre painting and portraits, but soon turned increasingly to depicting modern city life. Copenhagen became his central motif: streets, squares, boulevards and bridges in different weather conditions and changing times of day dominated his work. He was particularly fascinated by snowy scenes, rain-soaked streets and night-time lighting, as they enabled him to impressively capture light reflections and atmospheric moods.

Fischer was strongly influenced by French Impressionism without directly adopting its style. His painting is characterized by lively yet controlled brushwork, clear compositions and a keen sense of observation. In addition to lively street scenes, he also created numerous interiors and depictions of everyday bourgeois life, which provide an intimate insight into the life of his time.

Thanks to his high productivity and the great demand for his paintings, Fischer achieved considerable success during his lifetime. He exhibited regularly and was able to live entirely from his art. Today, Paul Gustav Fischer is regarded as one of the most important chroniclers of urban life in Copenhagen around 1900, and his works are in great demand on the international art market.
