Kunstdrucke von Peder Severin Krøyer

Collection: Art prints by Peder Severin Krøyer

Peder Severin Krøyer was a Danish painter and one of the most important representatives of the Skagen circle of painters. He showed exceptional artistic talent from an early age and was encouraged as a child by the zoologist and art lover Heinrich Hirschsprung. From 1870, Krøyer studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he received a solid academic education. During his studies, he already made a name for himself as a portrait painter and was able to earn a living through commissioned work.

After completing his training, Krøyer undertook extensive study trips throughout Europe, including to France, Spain and Italy. His stay in Paris in particular had a great influence on his artistic development, as he came into contact with French Impressionism there. His exploration of light, color and a freer style of painting had a lasting impact on his work and led to an increasing departure from strict academicism.

In the 1880s, Krøyer regularly settled in the northern Danish coastal town of Skagen, which became the center of his work. He joined the artists' colony there, which focused intensively on the special light atmosphere of the landscape. Krøyer devoted himself primarily to depictions of the social life of the artists' community, beach and sea views as well as atmospheric evening and moonlight scenes. His so-called "blue hours", in which he masterfully captured the cool, diffuse light of twilight, became particularly famous.

Over the course of his career, Krøyer developed an elegant, light-flooded style of painting that combined impressionistic elements with realistic accuracy. Despite personal crises and health problems, he remained extremely productive as an artist. Today, Peder Severin Krøyer is considered a key figure in Danish art around 1900, and his works are represented in major museums and are highly valued on the international art market.
