Ein schönes Kunstwerk des österreichischen Malers Johann Christian Brand, einem der herausragendsten Landschaftsmaler des 18. Jahrhunderts. Als Sohn des Landschaftsmalers Christian Hilfgott Brand und älterer Bruder des ebenfalls als Landschaftsmaler tätigen Friedrich August Brand war die Kunst bereits früh ein Teil seiner Familie. Johann Christian Brand studierte ab 1736 an der Wiener Akademie und erhielt dort 1772 die Professur für Landschaftszeichnen. Besonders ausgeprägt war sein Verständnis für die landschaftliche Naturschönheit, doch auch mit detailreichen Darstellungen von Architektur konnte er sich einen Namen machen. Durch sein künstlerisches Talent erlangte er bereits zu Lebzeiten große Anerkennung, und sein Werk markiert den Übergang vom Barock zur landschaftlichen Auffassung, weshalb er heute als Vater der österreichischen Landschaftsmalerei des 19. Jahrhunderts gilt. Brands Werke sind heute auch in zahlreichen Galerien außerhalb Österreichs zu finden.
